Bad Credit Car Loans

When it comes to people who need to buy a car and but they know they have bad or no credit, it’s the burning question.

How do I get a car loan when I have bad or no credit?

First of all the “how” isn’t quite as daunting as it may seem, there are many dealerships and outside companies who are willing to help you. The part that people give little thought to is asking the question “what …” as in:

What am I getting into? (with respect to the loan process)
What are my payments?
What are my interest rates?
What are my expectations as far as a car that will fit my needs?

Ok … let’s handle each one of these and by the time you’re finished reading this post, not only is the “how” going to be the breeze, but, you will be that much more knowledge about the “whats.” My whole goal here is to help you avoid a lot of heart ache and the expensive pitfalls that others are trapped into … so what do you say we get started!

What am I getting into? (the loan process)

The initial process is very straight forward, you fill out a free application for bad credit auto loans, hit the send button and off it goes to a lender loan specialist who will send back a “conditional approval for you!.” The conditional approval does NOT mean you have a loan. All it means is that the lender is willing to advance you funds to purchase a vehicle, however, you must provide them with some supporting documentation and the specs on the vehicle.

When the “conditional approval” comes back, then an appointment will be set up with the dealership or company you initially sent the credit application through. At the time this appointment is set up you will be advised to bring the following documents with you:

1. Driver’s License
2. Pay Stubs (at least 3 consecutive and not later than 60 days old)
3. Void cheque
4. Copy of a bill with your name and current address on it (you aren’t always asked to provide this, it depends how long you have lived at your current address)
5. Deposit – this is the hold the vehicle so that it can’t be sold out from under you. It is returned to you when you come back to pick up your car

When you go for your appointment with the above documentation in hand, it is at this time you will walk the lot with the loan specialist at the dealership. They will advise you at that time what the lender is willing to advance you in terms of a loan and you select a vehicle that will work for you within the range the lender has set.

Once you have selected the vehicle, the loan specialist at the dealership will send to the lender all the documentation you provided and the specifications of the vehicle you selected (ie, year, make, kms, price). Once the lender goes over the paperwork they will come back with a payment schedule, down payment (if required) and if there are any other additional pieces of supporting paperwork they need, it will be asked for at that time.

What are my payments?

It is the Lender who sets the payment and limit that you are to work within, not the dealership or the onsite loan specialist. The dealership and/or loan specialist can certainly work with you and talk to the bank on your behalf, but ultimately it is the Lender who makes that decision. The amount the Lender is will to provide you is determined by your credit history, your current credit situation and your current income.

What are my interest rates?

Ok, keep in mind you aren’t buying an interest rate, you’re buying a car, right? But I am going to just tell it to you straight, because to candy coat it isn’t going work.

If you have had a bankruptcy, have collections after you for not paying off any bill or credit card, or have been consistently late in making your payments, DON’T expect that you are going to get the same interest rates as those who have good credit. Reason being is that the credit accidents you have had have now made you a credit risk. Until you get back in the good books again with respect to your credit (ie make your payments on time and stay clear of any further bankruptices etc) your interest rate will be high. How high depends on your credit situation and what the Lender is willing to do to work with you.

What are my expectations as far as the car goes?

Keep in mind there is a difference between “want” and “need.” Remember it is the Lender who provides you with the cap to work within. What you need to do is determine what sort of vehicle do you need that meets the Lender’s objectives as well. It’s important to keep that in mind the couple of objectives that we are working towards:

1. to get a vehicle that you can afford, that will meet your needs
2. to rebuild your credit

You are not married to this car and keeping it for the rest of your life. Right now this car is a means to get you from A to B AND to rebuild your credit. Having said that, after 18 months or so, there is the possibility of being able to get you out of this car and into something else and at a better interest rate. For now however, just keep in mind your two objectives above.

I’ve seen so many people come into me with the expectation that just because they have had a few credit accidents that they are entitled to the same rates as someone who hasn’t. Granting of credit doesn’t work that way. Unfortunately credit accidents happen to all of us, however, if you keep the objectives in mind when you are car shopping, it puts things into perspective for you and makes the process a little easier.

An estimated 25% of automotive classifieds are from curbsiders.

In past posts we have covered tips and things you can check and do to ensure the used car you are looking at buying is sound and that you are getting a good deal. The other important aspect you need to be aware of is “WHO” are you buying that used car from. If you are looking to the free online classified sites, like Kijiji or Craigslist for a good deal, BEWARE of curbsiders.

So exactly what is a curbsider and why do you need to pay attention?

Read a little further, because the next 10-20 seconds could save you a lot of hurt.

Firstly, a curbsider is a type of dealer, typically who is unlicensed, who will pose as a private seller with a car to sell. They are in the business of selling stolen, rebuilt or odometer-tampered vehicles to unsuspecting people. These fraudsters love sites like Kijiji or Craigslist because it gives them the opportunity to run their “business” under the radar and provides them with a huge pool of unsuspecting people.

Now you may be thinking “ok if they are dealers then I have consumer protection.” Unfortunately, consumer protection applies to vehicle sales between an Ontario-registered dealer and a consumer, private sales do not apply.

How do you protect yourself?

Here are a few tips to that should certainly cause the radar to go up.

1. Look out for the “stories” – remember the Golden Rule “If it is too good to be true, then it probably is.”

2. Ask if the vehicle is certified and emmissions tested and request to see all the paperwork.

3. Ask for a land-line or work number in order to verify that the seller is as he or she says they are.

4. Do NOT buy the car if the seller’s name doesn’t appear on the current vehicle ownership registration.

5.  Have the seller provide you with an official Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP), which will tell you the history of the      car and who has owned it.

6. See and test drive the vehicle before you make any sort of payment agreement or arrangements.

7. Meet the sellers at their home or work, not at malls, parking lots or some other odd place.

8. Make arrangements to have the vehicle checked/inspected by your mechanic.

Curbsiders are everywhere and they are always praying on the unsuspected. There are some estimates that 25% of the autmotive classified ads are placed by those who are curbsiders looking to score. Bottom-line, trust your gut feelingm if it doesn’t seem right, then walk away.

Irv Gordon aims for 3 million miles in his Volvo P1800

American Irv Gordon – driver of the highest mileage vehicle on the road, a 1966 Volvo P1800 – has just turned 70. No he aims to reach an unmatchable record sometime in the next three years.
 
The two-seater sports coupe P1800 was presented at the auto show in Brussels 1960. Production started one year later, so 2011 the P1800 celebrates its 50 year anniversary. Almost 46,000 units of the famous Swedish sailor Pelle Petterson designed model were produced in various versions until production finished in 1973.
 
One of the P1800 icons is the British actor Roger Moore, who drove the car in the TV series “The Saint”. Another famous P1800 driver is the American Irv Gordon. With more than 2.8 million miles on his sporty red Volvo sports car, Gordon was celebrating his birthday on 15 July by affirming his goal of reaching three million miles before his 73rd birthday – forever enshrining him as an iron man in automotive endurance.
 
Gordon, a retired science teacher from East Patchogue, N.Y., purchased his Volvo in June 1966, and immediately fell in love, driving 1,500 miles in the first 48 hours. With a 125-mile round-trip daily commute, a fanatical dedication to vehicle maintenance and a passion for driving, Gordon logged 500,000 miles in 10 years.
 
In the Guinness Book of World Records

In 1998 with 1.69 million miles, he made the Guinness Book of World Records for most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle. In 2002, he drove the car’s two-millionth mile down Times Square to national and international media attention.
 
Today, Gordon breaks his own record every time he drives, whether it’s to Cincinnati for coffee, Rolla, Mo., for lunch or Green River, Wyo., for dinner. Gordon – like any mighty record-holder at the top of his game – is mindful of his legacy, as well as setting a record no one can beat.
 
“Three million miles by my 73nd birthday sounds right,” Gordon said. “But, whether I reach that mark is more up to me than it is the car. The car’s parts have long proven they can take it, but I’m not so sure about my own. Either way, it will be a fantastic testament to the engineering genius of Volvo as well as to the resiliency of folks my age.

“Three million miles is an iron clad number that I’d like to think sits right up there with DiMaggio’s consecutive game hitting streak. Who’s going to beat that? No one.”
 
Gordon is unsure what to do with his Volvo after three million miles, though he has considered selling it for no less than one dollar per each mile he’s driven.
 
“I used to think I’d park it in a museum where people will get to enjoy seeing the car that beat the odds – all with the same engine, same radio, same axles, same transmission and of course the same driver,” Gordon said. “Now I think, ‘no way.’ I’ll either keep driving it or sell it for $3 million.”
 
And what would he do if he made $3 million off the car?
 
“I’d spend it on traveling,” he said. “Road trips, of course.”

If You Aren't Provided with a Vehicle Report Ask Yourself Why?

There are many questions that should be at the forefront of your mind to ask when it comes to buying a pre-owned or use car. One that should ALWAYS be asked is “Can I see the vehicle history reoprt on this car?”

You want to know if the car you are looking at has been involved in any sort of accident or incident and if so the extent of the damage. Dealers are suppose to tell you if there is an accident registered on a vehicle, but if you have ever watched W5 that isn’t always the case.

I have gone out with friends who are looking to buy a car and you would be surprised at the comments we get back when we ask if the car is clean from accidents and if we can see the history report. We got the “yes of course it’s accident free, I don’t have anything on my lot like that.” One dealer so much as said that if we buy the car then he will purchase the vehicle history report for us. What good is that? You want to know ahead of time because this important piece of information provides you with the information you need to make an informed buying decision.

Typically as a used car comes in the Used Car Manager will already have the CarProof already in the vehicle folder, the Dealerships make this common practice. The smaller lots might not necessarily. There is a cost involved for the dealer, but that is the cost of doing business, so do not take any excuse as to why you can’t see it.

If you are buying a car privately, again, protect yourself. Ask if the car is free from any accidents or incidents, but regardless of what they say do your due deligence and check it out.

To check out a car you are buying off someone, get the VIN (vehicle information number), it is usually on the driver’s door on the inside, side panel, or on the driver’s side corner windshield. Write the number down and pull your own CarProof there is a cost to this but hey, a little bit now could save you thousands.

Ok, so you did your research online, read the used car reviews that are available and you have narrowed your choices down. Now comes the time to head off to the dealerships or lots where the cars are and take a look, EXCELLENT!

These 9 tips will help in what to look for generally and which will help you make a more informed purchase decision:

1. Take a walk around the vehicle and look for any sort of differences in paint colour. It could be an indication that there has been some body work done due to an accident. While you’re at it are there scratches and dents that need to be discussed about getting fixed if you were to purchase the vehicle.

2. Check the ground and under to hood for any sort of fluid leaks. Leaking fluid can generally be a sign that something needs repairing and if so depending on the leak it could be a costly one.

3. Start the engine and look under the hood. How does it sound smooth or rough? Is there an excessive amount of smoke?

4. Look at the general wear and tear of the vehicle. If there are leather seats, what is the general condition? Keep in mind that the driver seat wears more because of high use. But generally look at everything. It can usually give you a sign if the car was taken care of properly. Or that it was driven hard.

5. As odd as this sounds but I see it a lot now, check for odors. If you can’t handle the smell of smoke or the smell of a dog then the last thing you want is to buy a car that already smells like that. It takes a lot to get rid of those odors and if they are right in the seats you may never get it out, are you ok with that.

6. Was the vehicle mainly used for highway driving or local driving? Again, the stop/go of local driving is generally harder on a car than getting it out on the highway and letting it go. Was it a one owner car?

7. THIS IS BIG and something I see all the time. Is EVERYTHING in working order? In the winter does the heat work and if applicable what about the heated seats are they working. In the summer, how is the AC. Check the sunroof that it works, check your radio, power windows (all of them), locks, mirrors? Make sure all your accessories are in working order. Is there one key or two, is there an owner’s manual, mats. Make a note of them and use them as bargaining power when you are working out a deal.

8. When you’re driving, drive with the radio off (now that you know it works of course). Listen to the engine, how is the drive, do the brakes squeak or are they soft? Is there any excessive rattling or any sort of vibrating in the steering? Again, these are all signs that things are not necessarily right with the car.

9. Ask to see the Car Proof. DO NOT take the word that it is clean and no accidents. Ask if it is a daily rental, taxi or police vehicle. A dealership/car lot is suppose come forward and tell you but there are some that won’t. DO NOT accept this statement “Printing off a Car Proof is expensive and we don’t do it until the car is sold.” That’s bogus, don’t sign a thing, and walk away.

Keep in mind that once you have narrowed your selection down, there is nothing stopping you from putting a condition on the sale, ie, “sale subject to mechanic inspection.” What that means is you make arrangements to have a mechanic come and take at look at the car. In most cases a dealership will let you take the car to your mechanic to have them look at it, or at the very least make arrangements for the mechanic to go with you to the dealership. They can put the car up on a hoist for you and your mechanic can take a look and let you know if it is ok or not.

These tips will certainly give you a good foundation of what to look for when you are buying a pre-owned car. Do not allow yourself to be pressured, take your time. There is nothing wrong with taking the car out on a test drive and getting the information you need and then going back the next day. Take your time.

There are previous posts here that will take you through the steps that can help you find a good quality used car. What I wanted to do was explain the difference between buying from an ABC lot and from a Dealership.

Not all used car dealers are created equal and if you see a car on a lot that is of interest to you, do your homework and make sure you protect yourself. What I mean by that is this:

1. Get a vehicle report on the car – ask to see the UCDA Report or the Car Proof to check and make sure that there are no registered accidents. The report should also tell you if the car was registered in any other Province and if it is a US car. If you get a song and dance that the car is clean but no report is presented … don’t even go any further … just leave. DON’T TAKE THEIR WORD FOR IT.

2. Test drive the car – if you get the vehicle report and it looks clean then take the car for a test drive. Check and make sure that everything works; the power windows they all go up and down, locks, keyless entry, air conditioning, heat, power seats, heated seats … you get the picture check it all.

What I have found is when people come into our dealership and it is the middle of winter or summer they fail to check the other things that they will need down the road. In the middle of winter, people forget to check the a/c, sunroof, etc and in the summer they forget to check the heat and heated seats to make sure they work.

3. Have the vehicle mechanically checked – There is nothing wrong with having a mechanic check over a car for you. There have been plenty of times when I have had a customer who has asked me if we can take the car to his mechanic or if the mechanic can come to the dealership to check it out. Typically the mechanic comes to the dealership and the car is put on the hoist. In the case of used car dealers who don’t have the facilities (and a lot of them don’t) then make arrangements with them to have your mechanic check it out.

Not all used car dealers are created equal and you can pick up some good quality used cars, but you need to do your due diligenc.

The internet has made shopping for a used car a lot easier than how it has been in the past. Before you would check the papers and then go from dealership to dealership to find the car of your choice.

NOW! We can sit at home and search online through sites like trader.ca or better yet a set list of dealerships without having to go and be bothered!

However, when it comes to buying a used car online, the researching and searching is where the whole buying process ends. Buying a used car online is a little more difficult a process than buying a new car. With a new car you can shop for the best pricing and even if the dealership isn’t close to you the savings may be so great that it is worth your while travelling. You can go and take a look at the new car locally and see if it will meet your needs and fit withn your lifestyle and know that the new car on your local lot isn’t going to be different than the new one where the excellent deal is.

With a used car there is only ONE with those options, those kms and colour. You can go online and narrow down the used car search, send emails asking for details, but eventually you are going to have to go to the dealership and take a look at it, take it for a test drive and put it through its paces.

I have many customers who have used the internet as a research tool when they are in the market for a used car. They have commented that the interet has made theprocess a lot easier, but with a used car you NEED to go and see it and test drive it.

Generally speaking when it comes to cars used in Ontario, you can lease a used car, but only one model year back. Anything after that then it doesn’t really make sense financially to get into a used car lease, you would be better off to finance it or purchase it outright.

Banks won’t offer any sort of lease option when it comes to used cars. There are a few private companies that will and if a car dealership offers in-house financing then they will off a used car lease option. If you are going to go this route make sure and really understand what leasing a used car intails. Many people believe that when use go through a used car lease it is like a leasing a new car, you can give it back. This typically isn’t the case with a used car lease. You don’t have the option to give the car back at the end of the term. There is typically a payment at the end.

Know what is expected and make sure you get all your questions answered before you sign. Personally as much as I really like the car leasing option, when it comes to used cars, you are far better off to finance … but you decide what is best for you!

When you are shopping for a good, quality used car one of the most asked questions about the car is “has it been in an accident?”

Among other things, it is the Dealerships responsibility to disclose a vehicle’s accident history.

When you are shopping cars used in Ontario there are typically three reports that are used by Dealerships. These reports are:

1. CARFAX – the most popular one, we see CARFAX advertisements everywhere so of course it is the one that is most referred to when asking about a car accident history.

2. CARPROOF – is Canadian based and provides you with good detail about the used car you are interested in.

3. UCDA Vehicle Report – the majority of Dealerships are members of the Used Car Dealers Association and therefore use this report.

Out of these three is there one that is better over the other?

Even though it is the one most widely referred to CARFAX is a US based company, much of the information pertaining to a Canadian used car either isn’t available or isn’t as up to date as it should be. If you recall as well, it was Marketplace that did a segment about CARFAX and how the information on their Canadian used cars wasn’t totally accurate.

CARPROOF and the UCDA Vehicle Report are the most relevant because they are Canadian based. Their reports tell you if a used car was registered anywhere else in Canada or if the vehicle itself originated in the US (very important). It will also provide you with lien information as well.

CARS USED ONTARIO – USED CAR BUYING TIP …I have helped friends by a used car from time to time and through the course of their used car shopping we have visited a great many dealerships. The brand dealerships offering used cars will typically use the UCDA Vehicle Report because they are members of that Association. The “mom and pop lots,” in my experience, may use the UCDA but more often than not they have nothing. When they have been asked to produce the report they will do it, but you can tell they aren’t too happy about doing it. I even had one guy tell me that he would give me an Accident Report after I buy the car, because it costs $40.00 per history report. (Ok, I hope you see something wrong with that!). DO NOT accept the verbal confirmation that a vehicle hasn’t been in an accident. Ask to see either the UCDA Vehicle Report or CARPROOF.

The how to buy a used car is a process, just like anything. One thing that I usually suggest to my customers is that they break the process down into steps. It makes things a little easier and the task doesn’t seem as daunting or stressful.

The whole process of how to buy a used car pretty much starts with you, and looking at things like:

1. Is there a brand or a specific car I have seen on the road that appeals to me right now?

2. Is terms of options what MUST I have in my next used vehicle? (keep in mind that buying a used car isn’t like buying a new car where there are several different colours available with specific option groups etc.)

Next you want to do some research on used cars and the best place to go is online. The internet has certainly helped us on the “how to buy a used car” by providing us with some great sources of information and allows us to do a little price comparisons as well. Places you want to visit would be sites like:

1. Canadian Driver This site is excellent for gaining some real insight into the used car(s) you are considering. They also provide you with some other helpful likes as it relates to a brand itself. It is a site that I use on a regular basis and I like because it is based on Canada used cars.

2. Car Insurance Canada Canadian auto insurance companies differ by as much as $900 based on the same coverage. We tend to call maybe one or two Canadian auto insurance companies, at best, and use that as a guage.

This site provides you with insurance quotes Canada for up to ten insurance companies. It will give you an idea as to what your insurance premium will be based on the used car you a looking at. When you go through the list they give you, don’t forget to capture the phone number of the insurance company and the quote number, that way you have it later when it comes time to insuring your use car.

3. Auto Trader Trader is a good site to use for not only cost comparisons between dealers but if narrows the search down. Instead of going from dealership to dealership to see if they have the car you are looking for, you know who has it specifically. Saves a lot on time and certainly helps you with your budget as well in knowing what the going asking price is for the used car you are interested in.

The whole “how to buy a used car” process truly does start with you and the used car you want to buy, your budget and of course taking your car insurance premium into account.

You might have read this and thought “well, ya” but you would be surprised how many people come onto a dealership lot and really have no idea what sort of car they want, let alone how much they want to pay or even what the insurance is going to be.

These are all things that tie together and make the used car buying experience more enjoyable (yes, for real!!). When you take the time to do your research you are that much more informed and reduce your risks greatly!
